'A love of graffiti has gained Steve Powers notoriety on the streets, fame in the art world and a long arrest sheet. It has also earned him a Fulbright scholarship.

Although his tag, ESPO, can still be spotted on storefront grates throughout New York City, Mr. Powers, 40, has stopped painting illegally. Working out of his studio in Lower Manhattan, he now shows pieces at a SoHo gallery, has published art books, participated in the Venice Biennale and had his first solo museum exhibition last fall at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.'

Also look through the new issue of Swindle while youre there for an interview with Cept and Eine.

Jeloe Mission
20 May 2008 by GW
Jeloe has put up some great stories recently as part of a book that he is working on. So far he's up to page 4 where he talks about a failed mission he did with Neas and Zino.

Today Neas, Zino and I went off to try another backjump spot that Neas swore was a daytime come-up. We took a combination of trains and ended up a little over an hour later at a remote suburban endstation on the BR line. We got off the train and from the platform we scoped out the surrounding area. There were a few houses on the other side of the platforms fence which seemed to be active with kids on their bikes and parents watering the flowers. Behind the houses there was a massive field complete with cows and junked out cars. After a minute or two we left the station and walked around the back to a nearby walkway.

Neas and I chilled while Zino went to check out the route to the spot we were going to paint the train at. He came back about 5 minutes later and told us there were people all over the neighborhood just hanging out in front of their homes. He also said that he found another way to make it to the spot undetected. Neas and I followed him around the back of a garage and jumped a fence that led to the field. So now we were going to walk around the back of the houses instead of being blatant in the front. We got to a spot with a bunch of blackberry bushes. On the other side of the bushes was the end of the line for the train. Neas told me that as soon as the train pulled in we would watch the driver as he switched ends of the train. When the driver made it to the now front of the train we would jump out and do our shit.

A few minutes later our train had arrived. After all of the people made their way off the train and onto the platform we put on our ski masks and rubber gloves before running down towards the train on the opposite side of the platform.

As we made it to our panels I pulled out my can and started to do my first outline. With only the J done I heard a loud voice yelling "HEY!! What the fuck are you doing?!" It was the driver leaning out of the conductor’s booth. He was on his cell phone undoubtedly calling the rail office just a few yards from where we were standing. We threw our cans into our bags and ran off the way we had come. I always carry a different sweatshirt and a hat with me in my bag when I do stuff like that. As we ran I changed into the other things I brought and threw my old clothes into my bag of paint before ditching it. From there we ran through the neighborhood and onto a nearby golf course while interrupting various golf games every now and then.

We kept up a steady jog for a good 10 minutes and stopped once we made it to a creek bed with some little kid forts we could hide behind. All three of us thought it a good idea to wait there for a bit because the station manager had most likely called the British Transport Police. The only way we had to get back home was to go back to the same station so it seemed smart to wait until they were sure we were long gone.

After 30 minutes or so we started looking around and saw the golf course's restaurant. We headed towards it and decided to kill some time by eating some soup and having a drink. After eating our food a few hours had passed so we made our way back to the train station and got the bags of paint we hid earlier in some nearby scrap metal bin.

Once we were back on the platform we put our bags into the garbage can set in the middle of the station so if we were sweated we wouldn't have anything on us. With our bags hidden all three of us waited in different spots on the platform for the next train to arrive so we weren't as obvious. As it pulled in Zino grabbed our bags out of the garbage while we all boarded separate cars to make the hour and a half trip home. Again we didn't get to paint but still had fun regardless.

When I got back to the apartment I decided to call S to see if I could stay at his apartment again. He said it was no problem. I made plans to hang out with Neas again the following day and then bounced back to S's apartment for the night to relax. S and I bought some Kebabs and I racked a few beers for each of us. We got back to his apartment, ate our food and drank our beers. We then smoked some weed while watching TV before passing out to sleep.
